Development of ship projects, their financing and deployment as well as technical and nautical management of the Hanseatic Lloyd fleet is the focus of the apprenticeship at our company.

As of 1st February 2013 Hanseatic Lloyd is looking
for an apprentice shipping businessman. As of
1st August 2013 Hanseatic Lloyd also offers a training vacancy for an apprentice shipping businessman or, alternatively for a Business Administrator for Transportation/Logistics (BIVL)

Job description/training profile

Shipping businessmen maintain worldwide contact to customers, suppliers, on-board personnel as well as all other service providers in the maritime transport and port operation sector. Shipping businessmen perform all tasks involving equipment, operation and deployment of a seagoing vessel. They

  • analyse transport and cargo markets
  • develop market-oriented service offers
  • calculate costs and determine results
  • ensure that the ships are always in good condition and the crew is competent and reliable
  • keep the vessels and their technical staff ready for duty at all times
  • organise the clearance of ships in port
  • process vessel- and cargo-related documents
  • handle damage and insurance cases
  • carry out business processes in English

Training content

Shipping businessman is a recognised training occupation. As a qualified apprenticeship company, Hanseatic Lloyd is therefore geared to teaching the knowledge and skills defined in the generally binding training framework plan.

Furthermore, you will intensify your expertise and skills within the framework of the training at Hanseatic Lloyd through temporary assignments at cooperating training partners, such as a stevedoring company or a shipbroker's office. The attendance of our vessels for example at dry dock overhauls or a ship`s voyage on one of our container or tanker vessels during your training period gives you an insight view of the practical work on board and rounds off your qualifications.

Training period/procedure

The training period is fundamentally three years. However, it can be shortened to 2.5 years as part of the contract for secondary school graduates who have passed the A-level (university entrance qualification), commercial school students and trainees with a comparable educational and training background.

Business Administration for Transportation/Logistics (BIVL)

Those who have passed the A-level and perform their shipping businessman apprencticeship for three years have the opportunity of completing a course of study at the Bremen Institute for Trade and Transportation (BIHV) parallel to the vocational training, ending with a degree in ”Business Administration for Transportation/Logistics (BIVL)".

You acquire a degree in Business Administration through a combination of commercial training and a six-semester course of study by completing this study training programme. This new form of education and training offers a practice-oriented alternative to a purely university-based course of study.

In our corporate group the commercial training is structured according to functional divisions. They include Hanseatic Lloyd Schiffahrt GmbH & Co. KG, Bremen and Hanseatic Lloyd Chartering GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg. Hanseatic Lloyd Reederei GmbH & Co. KG in Bremen assumes overall charge of the training, which is provided in its Marketing/Sales, Financial Accounting, Controlling, Legal and IT Departments.

Vocational school

Parallel to the practical training at Hanseatic Lloyd theoretical knowledge is taught two days a week at the Vocational School for Wholesale Trade, Foreign Trade and Transportation in Bremen (BSGA). You can find further information on the BSGA at:

Requirements

Applicants for a traineeship at Hanseatic Lloyd must meet the following requirements:

Education

Preferably A-level (university entrance qualification)

Knowledge/skills

Interest in the international economy and a good understanding of numbers, a very good command of English, experience in using PCs, a communicative and confident manner, the ability to work in a team and express yourself well, pleasure in dealing with people from other countries and cultures are demanded in the shipping sector every day and all of these characteristics should apply to an above-average degree.
