Hanseatic Lloyd is certified to ISO 14001

 

In the field of ongoing improvement in attaining environmental objectives, Hanseatic Lloyd is taking a proactive approach. “The environmental aspect is gaining in importance,” stresses Carsten Lehfeld, when the conversation turns to the topic of “ISO 14001”. “The environment is moving more and more into the focus of attention of society. It is important and correct that we make our own contribution to this,” he explains. As the Environmental Manager at Hanseatic Lloyd he is responsible for introducing the environmental management system ISO 14001 on board and on land. In mid-June 2010, the certificate was issued to the onshore organisations in Bremen and thus also to the technically supported fleet.

Many companies attach importance to the fact that environmental aspects are taken into consideration when their goods are transported, continues Carsten Lehfeld. A corresponding certificate is therefore not only a voluntary commitment, but also entails a competitive advantage.

Hanseatic Lloyd has been intensively concerning itself with the implementation of ISO 14001 for some time. As in the case of the quality standard ISO 9001, it is a question of systematically tracking, investigating and continuously improving environmentally-relevant operational sequences in the company.

It is important to gain an overview of which processes have an impact on the environment – and where it is possible to actively intervene. On the ship, these processes relate to the main engine and the auxiliary diesel, and also to ship’s waste or ballast water. In the onshore organisation offices, for example, the energy requirements for equipment, the consumption of office supplies and energy as well as air conditioning play an important role. “Awareness in the company has already changed,” Carsten Lehfeld confirms. The company has already drafted guidelines as well as a manual for environmental management. In these the environmental policy of the company is set forth, processes are described and programmes, targets and responsibilities are defined. The first audits have been carried out in the office and on the “HLL Atlantic” (“APL Peru”) in May. “That went off very well,” states Carsten Lehfeld. This is a very complex process that got off to a good start. The next step on the to-do list is to revise the manual. Then the data collected over the past few months on board and in the office, are to be evaluated. After that further targets are to be formulated. By means of the permanent feedback control loop between the planning, implementation and monitoring of environmental targets described within the framework of ISO 14001, it is guaranteed that the environmental objectives at Hanseatic Lloyd will still retain their great importance in the future.

Protect the environment
The company aims to achieve the goal of ZERO oil spills to the sea and ZERO spill, leakage or unauthorised venting of cargo. All personnel serving for, or being employed by our company are encouraged to reduce or eliminate the risk of pollution whenever possible. It is mandatory to the individual as well as for the company to protect the environment and all employees are advised to adopt a mature, positive attitude in this respect.

Comply with environmental laws
We will at any time follow all applic able national and international Codes, guide lines, rules and regulations (also effluent discharge regulations) regarding the protection of the environment and other requirements to which the organisation subscribes.

Our philosophy is focused on prevention straight away. We react immediately to any malfunction by analysing and overcoming their cause and commit ourselves to continual improvement.
